Oneida Professional Services (OPS) is actively seeking a highly motivated, Lead Editor for the International Editing Service at Naval Postgraduate School (remote).
The Lead Editor for the International Editing Service at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) will oversee the editing team, ensuring high standards in the editing of international student theses to meet NPS’s publication and academic requirements. This role involves managing the quality control process, supervising a team of editors, and acting as the primary client liaison. The Lead Editor will also contribute to process improvement initiatives, ensure timely project delivery, and support the development of junior editors through training and mentorship.
Key Responsibilities:
- Editorial Leadership: Supervise the editing team, setting and upholding high standards for quality and consistency.
- Quality Control: Review final edits and ensure all documents meet NPS standards for grammar, style, and formatting; oversee spot checks and periodic reviews.
- Project Management: Ensure timely assignment and completion of thesis edits, coordinating resources to meet peak period demands.
- Client Relations: Serve as the primary contact for NPS, handling communications about project requirements, updates, and revisions.
- Training and Development: Mentor and provide training for junior editors on editing standards and academic citation requirements.
- Process Improvement: Continuously evaluate and enhance editing workflows to boost efficiency and quality.
- Reporting and Documentation: Maintain records of editing projects and prepare performance reports for review.
- Resource Allocation: Ensure editors have access to necessary style guides, tools, and materials; optimize resource distribution for productivity.
- Overview of the following: Editor shall edit theses for clarity of meaning, grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, proper word use, typos, spelling, concision, consistency, and organization; this includes editing citations and reference lists for punctuation and completeness in accordance with the citation style used in the thesis as required by each student’s department or advisor.
- Overview of the following: Editor shall provide an edited version of each student’s document covering areas listed above to the student and the Government via SharePoint and email, with edits, comments, and suggestions provided in the document via Track Changes, marginal comments, and/or email.
- Overview of the following: Editor will be given the thesis content in the NPS-approved format. Editor shall deliver edited theses with formatting no worse than when the document was first received from the student by the contractor.
- If needed for clarification, the Lead Editor shall interact directly with the students via email, videoconference, or phone to be able to appropriately indicate corrections in the edited document. This direct communication can save time, help ensure timely deliverables and increase comprehension of meaning between the student and editor.
Minimum Qualifications:
- U.S. citizenship
- Master’s degree in English or a related field
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in editing academic documents, including theses and dissertations, preferably in an academic or research environment
- Experience managing or supervising editorial teams, including quality control oversight.
- Exceptional organizational and project management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines during peak workload periods.
- Strong academic knowledge/command of citation styles commonly used in academic writing such as APA, IEEE, and Chicago.
- Prior experience as a technical or copy editor
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to identify and correct grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors.
- Strong communication skills to interact politely and professionally with a variety of audiences such as students and faculty.
- Proficiency using Share Point and Track Changes in Microsoft Word and remote document-sharing platforms
- Experience working with and editing for non-native English speakers a plus
- Experience editing government or military publications (or works intended for those audiences) a plus
Compensation Range:
- $30.00 per administrative hour
- $5.00 per page edited
